Theo Wanne Gaia 4 Metal Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece

Theo Wanne Gaia 4 Metal Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece

The GAIA IV tenor does everything previous GAIA tenor mouthpieces did, but with an incredible CORE to the sound!

GAIA IV has evolved into work of art and is now the most technically advanced mouthpiece Theo has ever made.  The Shark Gill™ baffle has been updated, and Theo’s completely new Large-Stadium Chamber™ added.  It takes the huge, warm and free sound the previous GAIA mouthpiece have become famous and iconic for, to a whole new level. It has greatly increased the ‘presence’ and core of the mouthpiece.  It still has the large chamber sound, but no ‘hollowness’….just fullness!

The GAIA is played by Karl Denson touring with the Rolling Stones, by Leon Silva on Ariana Grande’s song ‘Problem’. , and Ian Hendrickson-Smith with Ed Sheeran. Robert Martin, who was Frank Zappa’s saxophonist for 20 years had this to say about the GAIA:

“Just – wow! Theo, you nailed The GAIA Tenor Mouthpiece! It has a vast playground of expressive possibilities. It’s round and warm, yet easy to get the right amount of grit and bite.  It has an immediacy of response everywhere on the horn. Every pitch is centered and speaks instantly.  Fast runs sound amazingly clean and precise. Theo, how did you do that?   Furthermore, if Dexter Gordon were with us today, I bet he’d be playing a Theo Wanne™ GAIA!” – Robert Martin (Frank Zappa for 20 years)

The GAIA IV lends itself well to a traditional Jazz taste, but due to its amazing flexibility, it is at home in any style of playing.  It comes in 24K gold plated which has amazing resonant qualities.

The GAIA IV has an updated medium roll-over Shark Gill Baffle™, precision-sculpted inner sidewalls, and our newly created Large-Stadium Chamber™, which is a technologically advanced version of a traditional large chamber.

Take a close look at our baffles, rails, and chambers™, you will see they are manufactured with a quality and accuracy higher than any other mouthpiece ever made, vintage or new!

“Having tried many types of mouthpieces over the years, Theo Wanne products embody all the great qualities; tone, projection and color. His mouthpieces are one of kind.” – Dwayne Dugger  (Bruno Mars; recorded Uptown Funk on the GAIA)

Design & Innovation Features of the GAIA IV Tenor Mouthpiece:

1. Shark-Gill Baffle™:  The arced lines you see on the baffle of the mouthpiece is theshark-gill-baffle™, which is patented by Theo Wanne so you will only find this innovative feature on our mouthpieces, or those we license it to.  The shark-gills™ work on the physics principle of ‘boundary layer effect’, similar to the effect of dimples on a golf ball, which allow the golf ball to travel further through the air.  The golf ball dimples suck air behind the golf ball, so the golf ball does not ‘drag’ an air pocket along with it while it travels.   In a similar way, the shark-gills™ disturb the airflow, removing air pockets in the mouthpiece/neck/saxophone.  The airstream can then flow closer to the inner walls of the mouthpiece and instrument.    The result is much greater dynamics from soft to loud, and an overall ‘fuller sound’.

2. Large-Stadium-Chamber™:  The open area, under the reed, inside the mouthpiece is the chamber.  Theo’s stadium-chamber gets its name from its shape, which is reminiscent of a Football Stadium.  The larger size gives a fat sound, but the unique stadium shape fills out the sound, so it has very good projection too.

3. Elliptical Window:   The window, the open area under the reed, is wide, and uses Theo’s proprietary elliptical shape.  This allows more air to enter into the small chamber giving fullness to the focused sound.

4. Theo’s proprietary “bullet” chamber: The term ‘bullet chamber’ has been used for years in describing Berg Larsen mouthpieces.    It is the transition of the back of the baffle into the chamber.   We used a unique ‘elongated-oval’ shape to enhance the already focused, yet full, sound.   While it looks simple, the shape is actually highly sculpted.
